Author Guidelines

  • All articles must be original, fully researched and finalized work. They should not have been published before or under consideration elsewhere. (Subsequent re-publication after a period, eg in collected papers, will be considered on its merits and not reasonably refused).
  • All articles must advance knowledge and understanding of a particular period/ aspect of royal studies and will normally contribute to understanding of royal studies beyond the particular example studied.
  • Review policy: All articles will be subject to a double-blind peer review process by two readers.
  • Article length: Excluding book reviews, articles should have an optimal length of 6,000-10,000 words including notes and a bibliography. Maximum length is subject to negotiation but should not normally exceed 20,000 words (including notes and bibliography). Shorter items, conference reports and notices may be sent to the journal for inclusion in the journal's accompanying blog.
  • Languages: The journal will accept articles in the following languages-English (preferred), Spanish, Portuguese, French and German.
  • Output: The journal will be published bi-annually with the possibility of occasional thematic issues.
  • Format: All articles must be submitted in either a Word document (.doc/.docx) or in rtf format and should conform to the house style guidelines of the journal for the text and references. Please download the style guidelines.
  • Accompanying Information: Along with their article, authors should submit an abstract (in English) and indexing terms.

Book Reviews

The Royal Studies Journal includes book reviews of works connected to the field of Royal Studies. If you would be interested in reviewing works for the RSJ, please send an email to the editors, using the email link on this page. Please indicate your areas of expertise and a short bio or attach a CV so that we can match you to appropriate works to review. Alternatively, if you register on the RSJ site, you can note your willingness to review books as well as submitted articles on the registration form.

If you are interested in reviewing for the RSJ, we also recommend that you regularly consult our Books for Review page on this website, where we advertise books available for review which have not yet been assigned to a particular reviewer. See the instructions on this page on how to request one of these unassigned books for review.

In addition, if you are the author of an upcoming or recent work in the field of royal studies and would like your work to be reviewed in the RSJ, please contact us to arrange for a review copy to be sent. Publishers - please contact us with the details of any forthcoming or recent titles that would be of interest to our readers and we can send you an address for review copies to be posted to.
